Rodrigo Barcena Mendes: The Multidisciplinary Alchemist of Space and Form
EN: Born in São Paulo in 1977, Rodrigo Barcena Mendes’ relationship with art began in childhood, deeply inspired by his mother, an oil painter, and the raw freedom of growing up by the sea in Vila Velha (ES). This early passion led him as a young man to teach freehand drawing classes for children in his neighborhood in Freguesia do Ó, establishing his visual vocation long before life called him to master the material world.
Rodrigo’s professional trajectory is a testament to continuous learning and technical mastery. He spent his early youth working on metallurgical factory floors, training on the production line as a precision machinist and toolmaker (torneiro mecânico/ferramenteiro). This obsession with material behavior, mechanical stress, and industrial fixtures followed him through his academic pursuits in Agronomic Engineering at FCA-UNESP/Botucatu — where he deepened his knowledge of fiber chemistry and organic acidity — and, later, in Architecture and Urbanism at Universidade Anhembi Morumbi, refining his mastery over applied geometry, volumetry, and space perception.
This rare combination of engineering, physics of light, and artistic sensibility paved the way for an extraordinary 25-year career behind the scenes of major Brazilian television networks. Starting at the historic TV Cultura, Rodrigo worked on the scenography of foundational programs like "Cocoricó" and adapted theatrical productions for the iconic television series "TV Rá Tim Bum". His technical excellence led him to TV Bandeirantes, where he structured and coordinated a comprehensive prop-making and scenic painting department. As an independent contractor (PJ), he expanded his technical signature nationwide: crafting puppets and manipulating marionettes for major children's telenovelas at SBT (such as "Carrossel" and "Poliana") and developing special effects for TV Record. At Rede Globo, his expertise is deployed as an independent puppet wrangler (PJ) for the character Louro Mané on the daily show "Mais Você," alongside operating as a trusted vendor of props and scenic objects for the network's unified Art Department.
Rodrigo’s reputation as an elite artisan has also crossed international lines. In 2022, he served as part of the specialized Brazilian crew of puppet operators and wranglers for global superstars Coldplay during their "Music of the Spheres" World Tour. Recently, he also operated as head wrangler and manipulator for the national 30th-anniversary theatrical tour of the legendary Brazilian show "TV Colosso," keeping complex animatronics in perfect working order.
Today, in a tight-knit creative studio partnership with his wife — whom he met during the golden era of TV Cultura’s special effects department —, Rodrigo merges decades of engineering, material physics, structural woodwork, and theatrical magic into sophisticated contemporary paintings and digital illustrations. PT: Nascido em São Paulo in 1977, a relação de Rodrigo Barcena Mendes com a arte começou na infância, profundamente inspirada por sua mãe, pintora a óleo, e pela liberdade de crescer à beira-mar em Vila Velha (ES). Essa paixão precoce o levou, ainda jovem, a dar aulas de desenho à mão livre para crianças em seu bairro na Freguesia do Ó, estabelecendo sua vocação visual muito antes de a vida o chamar para dominar o mundo material.
A trajetória profissional de Rodrigo é um testemunho de aprendizado contínuo e maestria técnica. Passou a juventude trabalhando em chãos de fábrica metalúrgicos, treinando na linha de produção como torneiro mecânico e ferramenteiro de precisão. Essa obsessão pelo comportamento dos materiais, tensões mecânicas e gabaritos industriais o acompanhou em sua jornada acadêmica na Engenharia Agronômica na FCA-UNESP/Botucatu — onde aprofundou seus conhecimentos em química de fibras e acidez orgânica — e, mais tarde, em Arquitetura e Urbanismo na Universidade Anhembi Morumbi, refinando seu domínio sobre geometria aplicada, volumetria e percepção espacial.
Essa rara combinação de engenharia, física da luz e sensibilidade artística abriu caminho para uma carreira extraordinária de 25 anos nos bastidores das principais redes de televisão brasileiras. Começando na histórica TV Cultura, Rodrigo trabalhou na cenografia de programas fundamentais como "Cocoricó" e adaptou produções teatrais para a icônica série de televisão "TV Rá Tim Bum". Sua excelência técnica o levou à TV Bandeirantes, onde estruturou e coordenou um departamento completo de adereçaria e pintura cênica.
