Teatro Rá-Tim-Bum: Award-Winning Children's TV Series

Role: Assistant Set Designer to Gert Seewald (Head Set Designer)

EN:  Rodrigo Mendes joined the technical scenography team during the golden era of the program Teatro Rá-Tim-Bum's revamp, acting as the direct assistant to the renowned head set designer Gert Seewald. Under the general direction of Bete Rodrigues, this pioneering project focused on the transcription of dozens of acclaimed children’s stage plays from São Paulo's theater circuit into the language of television. Throughout the project, the professional collaborated on adapting productions from established companies, such as Cia. Le Plat du Jour (with the plays Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs) and Cia. Furunfunfum, managing the production workflow from the opening segment Assembleia dos Bichos to complex and whimsical designs like As Velhas Fiandeiras and Planeta Sbrufs.

Challenges & Core Competencies:

• Language Transposition (Stage-to-Screen): Responsible for adapting stage designs originally conceived for proscenium stages and conventional theaters to fit the dimensions, spatial volume, and technical blueprints of a television studio, ensuring optimal blocking and composition for multi-camera shoots.

• Dynamic Scenic Technology & Scale: Technical adjustment, transformation engineering, and maintenance of playful, multi-functional, and fast-rotating sets. The productions required swift assembly, live on-camera transitions, and safe, direct structural interactions with the cast.

• Visual Aesthetic Preservation: Maintaining the visual identity of the theatrical companies by meticulously aligning textures, prop finishes, and color palettes with the technical requirements of professional studio lighting and camera capture.

EN:  With full creative freedom granted by head set designer Gert Seewald, Rodrigo Barcena Mendes spearheaded the graphic and conceptual development for the set design of "A Rainha Marmota" (2006). Inspired by Brazilian literature of cordel, the scenography was designed using sharp black silhouettes and cutouts, simulating large stencil masks. The technical drawings followed a clever logic to enable the network's scenic carpenters to manually cut the large MDF panels using handheld jigsaws. Under the direction of Bete Rodrigues, this layered black composition—representing the city, the sea, and the fortune-teller's domain—functioned as a subtle and elegant graphic frame against the illuminated backdrop, ensuring absolute focus remained on Cris Miguel and Sergio Serrano's performance with their handcrafted puppets.

As Velhas Fiandeiras

EN:  The set design for "As Velhas Fiandeiras" adapted for the TV Rá Tim Bum studio abandoned hyper-realism and embraced a handcrafted and geometric aesthetic, simulating a children's scrapbook coming to life. Utilizing colorful panels, large textured fabrics, and stylized curtains that referenced the very universe of threads and sewing, the scenography playfully defined the humble home and the palace halls, maintaining the minimalist essence of the theater group. This clever arrangement of elements and the centering of the magical spinning wheel allowed the cameras to move freely through the space, capturing in tight close-ups the rich facial expressions and the grotesque humor of the actresses.

Rapunzel

EN:  The recording of the "Rapunzel" (2006) episode at the TV Cultura studios required highly precise choreography between the technical crew and the puppet-manipulator actors from Cia. Furunfunfum, Marcelo and Paula Zurawski, who operated handcrafted puppets and sang live simultaneously. Under the direction of Bete Rodrigues, the studio was mapped so that the cameras could move in synchronicity with the multiple integrated environments of Gert Seewald's set—alternating between wide shots that captured the grandeur of the scenic forest and tight close-ups on the medieval tower's window. This dynamic ensured that the manipulation tricks and swift character changes remained entirely hidden, translating the warmth and enchantment of puppet theater into the swift and expressive language of TV.

EN:  The set design for "O Menino Que Virou História" simulates the interior of a giant book, combining a whimsical and theatrical aesthetic with vibrant colors and exaggerated shapes. The environment is filled with enormous pages featuring popped-out text, book spines that function as walls, and stacks of volumes serving as furniture, creating the illusion that the characters have shrunk. Elements like artificial spider webs and dusty corners reinforce the hiding place of the moths Zigoberta and Ploft, while expressionistic lighting highlights the transition between the library's mystery and the enchantment of the literary world.
