The Jurema Giant Puppet: Heritage Restoration and Performance – Agora Vai Block
EN: The 'Boneca Jurema' (Jurema Puppet) is the ultimate symbol and master-of-ceremonies of the traditional street carnival block 'Agora Vai', a prominent ensemble within São Paulo’s official street carnival circuit since 2004. Showcasing the striking aesthetics of a Black woman alongside an imposing physical presence, this giant puppet fulfills a role that transcends entertainment: she stands as a living manifesto celebrating Afro-Brazilian heritage and the cultural pioneering of the Barra Funda district—the historical cradle of São Paulo's samba, birthed by legendary figures like Dionísio Barbosa and his trailblazing carnival cordão in the 1910s. Bound to this rich historical background, Jurema operates as a platform for visual activism, leading the parade under banners that champion women's rights, freedom, and safety.

EN: Preserving this festive cultural heritage demands a rigorous workflow of artistic maintenance and structural fabrication. The block's icon recently underwent a meticulous revitalization and restoration process, spearheaded by Rodrigo Barcena Mendes and Evelin Cristina Silva. The project merged scenic design and specialized craftsmanship to reconstruct the character's core framework, renewing her volumetric geometry, facial definitions, and the custom wardrobe boasting purple and yellow—the official colors of the organization. This structural and aesthetic intervention was vital to safeguard Jurema's visual identity, ensuring the heavy-duty durability required to withstand intense public street performances.

EN: As founding members of the Agora Vai block, the artist couple composed of actress Carlota Joaquina and puppeteer Eduardo Alves entrusted Rodrigo Barcena Mendes and Evelin Cristina Silva with the mission of crafting a new iteration of the Jurema Puppet, aligning her appearance with contemporary movements of social commentary and affirmative representation. Being active members of the ensemble since its inception—and having previously engineered other iconic parade props, such as the modular "Jacaré" (Alligator) puppet, which allowed festival-goers to step inside and participate in its collective manipulation—the makers seamlessly fused their technical mastery with this deeply personal request. During the historical 2026 parade run, this studio-to-street synergy culminated in an emotional procession: while Rodrigo led the live technical manipulation of the monumental sculpture, Evelin performed live within the parade's musical core, playing the snare drum (caixa) for the "Dengosa" drum section.

EN: By seamlessly weaving historical research, artisanal reconstruction, and live street performance, Jurema’s new iteration debuted to absolute technical success and popular acclaim. The final outcome of this structural and aesthetic intervention guarantees not only the physical endurance and logistics required for the ensemble's future parades, but successfully safeguards the visual power and continuity of one of the most socially engaged carnival legacies in São Paulo’s cultural history.

Diogo Defante "O Gari" - Stunt Puppet

EN: For the music video "O Gari" by multi-artist Diogo Defante, the studio engineered a full-scale anthropomorphic stunt puppet designed to withstand high-impact action sequences. The piece was developed to substitute the artist during the cinematic climax, where the character is thrown into the mechanical compaction system of a moving garbage truck.

EN: The structural engineering of the puppet utilized a combination of density-controlled polyurethane foam and silicone acrylic batting, ensuring anatomical flexibility and accurate weight distribution to replicate human body dynamics during fall sequences. The outer skin was fabricated from high-strength soft fleece fabric, selected for its elasticity and resistance to the harsh friction of heavy industrial machinery.

EN: The aesthetic finishing focused heavily on material fidelity to match the artist's features. The hair and beard were constructed using short-pile textured plush fabrics, while the signature eyepatch was custom-made from high-density EVA foam with precise geometric edges. The black wardrobe t-shirt featured hand-painted textile art to perfectly replicate the iconic graphic pattern of the original costume, ensuring seamless visual continuity between the actor and the stunt replica under motion.

The Colonel and Perpétua Giant Puppets: Heritage Restoration and Creation – Bloco Urubó

EN: For the 2018 Carnival parade at the historic Largo da Matriz in the Freguesia do Ó district, Rodrigo Barcena Mendes and Evelin Cristina Silva executed a high-level handcrafted engineering project driven by deep community roots for Bloco Urubó—a street carnival ensemble originally founded by Rodrigo's neighborhood childhood friends. Commissioned by photographer and co-founder Rafael Canuto (affectionately known as Caricá), the duo was tasked with revitalizing the parade’s visual identity through an incredibly sustainable and creative workshop workflow: fabricating a brand-new iteration of the iconic 'Coronel' giant puppet while introducing a brand-new character to the monumental roster, 'Perpétua' (inspired by Brazil's legendary television drama).

EN: The definitive technical triumph of the project centered on an ingenious matrix upcycling and material recycling strategy within the atelier. Rather than discarding historical materials, Rodrigo and Evelin preserved 'Coronel's' original core body frame and sculpted a monumental new head from block-pressed polystyrene (styrofoam). This new sculpture was engineered at an expanded scale, undergoing professional surface sealing and specialized airbrushed scenic painting to enhance its physical durability and visual presence on the street. With the character's former head now available, the duo applied advanced prop-making re-engineering to transform it into 'Perpétua', completely reshaping the facial layout, applying new custom hair work, and tailoring a distinctive wardrobe.

EN: To support the newly introduced female character, the studio engineered a custom, ultra-lightweight internal skeleton utilizing structured aluminum profiles to ensure mechanical stability against wind resistance on the avenue. Beyond the technical fabrication and logistics, Rodrigo Barcena Mendes actively joined the live street performance, handling the technical manipulation of the large-scale puppets across multiple carnival runs along the historic Largo da Matriz path. This immersive approach seamlessly bridged behind-the-scenes mastery with live performance execution, successfully transferring a robust physical puppet legacy to future generations of operators within the organization.

Character Costume Fabrication – Casa Hope: Monsters Campaign
EN: For the institutional advertisement campaign for Casa Hope, created by the creative agency Ogilvy & Mather and produced by Paranoid BR under the cinematic direction of Vera Egito in 2010, Rodrigo Barcena Mendes and Evelin Cristina Silva were commissioned to handle the physical fabrication and structural engineering of a custom series of creature suits and studio props. Working strictly from the original character layouts and designs provided by the advertising agency, the duo successfully translated the two-dimensional concepts into functional, three-dimensional physical pieces, while providing rigorous technical on-set assistance throughout the entire shooting schedule to manage rapid adjustments and structural adaptations.

EN: The textile engineering and three-dimensional pattern making demanded meticulous criteria for ergonomics and lightweight properties. For the full-body character suits, such as the textured brown plush creature and the spherical grey costume, the duo developed internal understructures using soft-density polyurethane foam and padded flexible wireframes, ensuring unrestricted mobility for the performers and absolute physical safety for the children during outdoor playtime and improvised scenes. The outer skins featured a rich variety of heavy scenic textures, utilizing long-pile faux fur, soft fleece fabrics, industrial felt, and custom oversized buttons with handcrafted overlock stitching.

EN: The smaller table-bound characters were constructed with silicone-coated acrylic batting and concealed counterweighted bases, allowing the young cast to naturally handle the props during classroom and dining hall sequences. Each creature was finished with unique expressive features—including thermoformed acrylic eyes and high-density EVA foam details. Under the expert performance of puppeteer Eduardo Alves, brought onto the production by the fabricators to bring the creatures to life on set, the final assembly seamlessly integrated high-definition costume fabrication into the commercial’s cinematic narrative, marking a technical success for the execution and logistics led by Rodrigo Barcena Mendes and Evelin Cristina Silva.

EN: Development and fabrication of a large-scale Boi Bumbá puppet, custom-built for the show "A Noite é uma Criança" on Rede Bandeirantes, hosted by Otávio Mesquita and his co-host Homem D'ália (producer Serginho). Commissioned for special on-location coverage at the Parintins Folklore Festival, the puppet's engineering required an elongated body design to arrange both hosts in a straight line, allowing them to remain visible and interact directly with the public.
The head was three-dimensionally sculpted from a polystyrene block, finished with papier-mâché skinning and custom art painting matching the network's color scheme. The internal framework was constructed using pinewood slats, glued and nailed in a figure-eight configuration (top view), ensuring maximum mobility on the vertical axis while preventing any horizontal structural failure during dance performances. To protect the performers against thick crowds, 2mm high-impact polystyrene (PS) strips were riveted onto the frame, layered with 20mm foam, and finished via compressed spray gun painting. The body was completed with plush fabrics and a classic traditional chita fabric skirt to deliver fluidity and movement to the choreography.
